Normally, asking someone, "How old are you?" might be considered a little rude. But when it comes to the creatures of the reef, the answers are simply too intriguing not to ask. We've all had those moments while snorkeling when a wrinkled, barnacle-encrusted sea turtle glides gracefully past, making you think, "That dude has seen some things.". Or perhaps you've drifted over a coral colony stretching for tens of meters and found yourself wondering, "Were you alive when the dinosaurs still roamed the Earth?". Well, in this blog, we're going to ask that nosy question "How old are you?" to some of our favorite residents of the reef. The answers might just leave us all feeling a little younger. Giant Barrel Sponge On tours, every now and again, I encourage our guests to swim towards deeper water and peak over the edge of the shallow plateau we are snorkeling over. One of the most prominent things you will likely see are these giant barrel sponges that can grow to be so large that you could easily fit inside one. When it comes to age, these sponges absolutely knock it out of the park... and right into outer space. Giant barrel sponges tend to grow anywhere between a few millimeters to a couple of centimeters a year. Depending on their position on the reef they will have more or less nutrient rich water flow through them which correlates with their growth rate. By taking repeated photographs of their growth over time scientist have estimated that many of these sponges are 100s of years old. “Yes! wonderful things” This was what Howard Carter famously said to Lord Carnarvon whilst peering into a dusty and ancient antechamber illuminated by just a single candle, and not looked upon by human eyes for over 3000 years. It was full of treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamen and is arguably the most significant archeological find in recent times. And all of us on my latest Snorkel Venture tour to Egypt were treated to viewing these wonderful things on our visit to the brand new Grand Egyptian Museum laid out in what is the largest museum in the world. The sheer scale of this astonishing feat of modern engineering designed to display and make accessible those treasures found by Howard Carter and others after him is simply breathtaking.. It’s so well done and whilst massive it’s quite easy to navigate especially with the aid of our Egyptologist Amira who took us on a curated selection of the most famous exhibits. We were there only half a day, and it’s not enough, but for our group of travel weary Americans and a fellow Brit it was just enough to savor this incredible place and whet our appetites for a future visit. This trip report is going to be a bit different, and I make no apology for this. You see, being a photographer I tend to recall things based around pictures I’ve taken, so I’m not going to list all the sites we visited, but I am going to curate the places that have had a particular impact upon me, especially from a visual image point of view. This is difficult on a tour like this as there’s always a lot to choose from, and it is a very personal view. Chatting with our group at the end of each day never stops informing me that whilst there is often universal appreciation for the various delights we may have all encountered that day, each and every individual has their own unique perspective. So alongside sharing with the group the exciting sea snake encounter we had all swim amongst us, there’ll be someone as equally rapt about watching a starfish make its way slowly across the reef, or a pair of tiny bulldozer shrimp and a partner goby doing their thing—keeping what must rank as one of the oddest cohabiting trios in apartment sharing history. Coral Eye is the new sister resort to Siladen Island Resort, and is located just around the corner from Siladen, relatively speaking, on Bangka Island, just off the tip of northern Sulawesi. The buzz around this new boutique resort in the snorkeling community has been huge, and had it not been for my busy schedule, I would have paid Coral Eye a visit much sooner. After waiting the better part of a year for my opportune moment to jump on a plane and jet off to Manado, I have now finally been able to see what all the chatter that I'd been inundated with was really all about. As many of you have already visited Siladen as part of one of our snorkeling safaris that stops in North Sulawesi, I don't think I need to elaborate too much on what this means in terms of service, the food, the accommodation, and, of course, the snorkeling at Coral Eye. If you haven't had the pleasure of visiting Siladen yet, you will have no doubt heard of this award-winning resort's outstanding reputation. As one of Indonesia's oldest and most well-regarded resorts, Siladen sets the tone for other resorts to follow. Now, with over twenty years of experience behind the Siladen/Coral Eye team, this new resort could very well be the resort that raises the bar a notch higher when it comes to the entire experience. Misool Resort has, quite possibly, one of the largest house reefs of all the resorts we visit in Indonesia. You could also argue that Misool's reef is one of the best as it's not only beautiful, but there are so many different features to it, like the blacktip reef shark nursery, the turtle feeding grounds, or the resident school of bumphead parrotfish that always keep it interesting! One thing that a lot of guests love, particularly those staying in any of the North Lagoon villas or water cottages, is that you can access the house reef from your front porch at higher tides. That being said, out of convenience for storing your snorkeling gear and the tidal changes, the easiest place to enter the reef is from the main jetty/dock in front of The Hive—where all your snorkeling gear can be conveniently stored. I say the jetty/dock is the best place to enter the reef by because you can do so at any time. At lower tides you can not enter from your villas or water cottages as there is just not enough water in the lagoon for you to swim out of, also, at times the current can be a little bit strong, and exiting the lagoon to access the main reef can be a bit of a challenge. Part of what keeps Misool Resort's house reef so active with marine life and corals are the currents that it regularly has. Current = Life. At most times of the day, the currents will be quite mild, but you will most likely notice some current especially in the channel and on the point of the island. In mild conditions, you can swim against the current without too much effort, especially in the shallows, which will allow you to snorkel the
