Triton Bay and Raja Ampat are widely considered as the pinnacles of the planet's marine biodiversity. These two destinations lie within a coastal region known as the Bird's Head Seascape in the eastern part of Indonesia which is home to over 1,700 species of fish, more than 600 species of coral, and 17 different species of whales and dolphins. We've put this combination of locations together with the hope that we will have a very exclusive experience of snorkeling with whale sharks in Triton Bay in combination with some incredible reef snorkeling in Raja Ampat.
Triton Bay Resort is the only resort in the region of Triton Bay which lies to the south of Raja Ampat. As snorkelers we have exclusive use of the resort for the duration of our stay. December is one of the best months for whale shark encounters. It is important to note that sightings are not guaranteed, although we would describe the possibility as high. Whale sharks are attracted to bagans (fishing platforms) and come to feed on the schools of baitfish below the platforms. We'll have 2 trips to the bagans, where we hope to be able to snorkel with whale sharks, and the rest of our time there will be spent exploring some of the beautiful reefs in the area.
From Triton Bay we will travel north to Raja Ampat which also offers excellent chances of encounters with manta rays, masses of schooling fish and spectacular coral reef. Here we will be based at Papua Explorers Resort for 6 full days of snorkeling some at the best sites in the region.
While Raja Ampat can have some strong currents, our local guides will chose protected sites, or appropriate times to enter the water to avoid being in current. If we are ever in a current, we will always float with the water and not try to swim against it. One needs to be comfortable in the water with some upper body strength to climb back up the ladder onto the boat.
This tour is for 12 guests only and is accompanied by a Snorkel Venture tour leader.
This group tour is exclusively for snorkelers. All trips are accompanied by at least one Snorkel Venture guide as well as local guides who are all well versed in the marine life and the reefs. Staff are available to help with water entry and exits, and all snorkel sessions have boat surface support to ensure our safety.
We'll spend 4 nights at Triton Bay Resort with 3 days of snorkeling. Our planned schedule is for 2 snorkeling sessions with the whalesharks which will take place early in the morning when sightings are most likely. We'll plan to spend 60 - 90 minutes per session at the bagans (local fishermen platforms), and then head to a beach for refreshments. On the return to the resort we'll stop off at a reef snorkeling site.
Our last day is for reef snorkeling only but we do keep this day flexible for another opportunity to see the whalesharks if we have been unlucky on the previous days. As scheduled we will head out for 2 sessions which will most likely include Little Komodo which has rocks covered in brightly coloured soft corals and attracts a lot of schooling fish. This is no doubt one of Triton Bay premier sites.
Afternoons and evenings are for flexible time to snorkel the house reef which is easily accessed from the beach in front of the resort. This is a fabulous reef and is also great for night snorkeling with the possibility of seeing lots of critters and rare epaulette walking sharks. One guided night snorkel is included in the package, although underwater flash light rental is not so please do bring one if you have one.
After 4 nights at Triton Bay Resort we'll travel north to Papua Explorers in Raja Ampat for 6 full days of snorkeling. Each day will feature 3 boat snorkeling sessions. Days will usually consist of one morning excursion to 2 different snorkel sites with a stop for refreshments in between, then back to the resort for lunch followed by an afternoon boat snorkel. Papua Explorers is based on the Dampier Strait, an area of Raja Ampat which attracts a lot of marine life. We'll have the opportunity to visit sites which attract manta rays as well as visiting fringing reefs and sea mounts covered in hard and soft corals. Fish life is healthy with big schools of snapper, fusilier and jacks swarming around the reef.
Papua Explorers also has an excellent house reef which is easily accessible and can be enjoyed whenever you wish.

Triton Bay Divers
We have exclusive use of Triton Bay Divers for the duration of our stay. As such we have suggested a rename to Triton Bay Snorkelers! This boutique resort is nestled amongst the jungle with each of the six cozy bungalows facing out to the picturesque scene of palm studded white sand beach and turquoise sea. Each bungalow is designed using traditional techniques whilst still allowing for that modern touch, all have their own veranda, ceiling fans, work desks, and large comfortable beds complete with mosquito nets. The open air restaurant and bar is where we will be served our meals. It also serves as a comfortable hang out area where you can scroll through your new fish photos with your new snorkel friends. There is also a snorkel center where we will each have our own storage stations for all of our snorkeling gear.

I really appreciated the extra effort in all the assistance in the month(s) leading up to the tour, as well as, getting everyone to the destination and then helping ensure we knew where we were going once the tour was done. Andrea, December 2019
