If you’re looking for pristine reefs devoid of tourist boats and other people in the water, with great chances of manta ray encounters and beautiful scenery above and below the surface, then look no further than our Sumbawa & Alor Snorkel Safari.

We’ll start our tour in the northeast coast of Sumbawa where we’ll have exclusive access to four different regions for some truly amazing and unique snorkeling. Whilst based at the stunning Kalimaya Resort, our days will be spent exploring the range of reefs and marine environments in West Komodo, Sangeang Volcano, Gili Banta, and Eastern Sumbawa. As these areas are seldom visited by people, you can expect pristine hard and soft corals in abundance, as well as busy fish life, and good chances of turtles, larger rays, and reef sharks cruising around. Around Sangeang Volcano, which is still semi-active, you’ll have the opportunity to swim over its bubbling black sands and hyper-rich reefs which are unlike any of the other reefs in the region as a result of its nutrient-dense volcanic substrate.  Out front of the resort you’ll find that Kalimaya has its own fantastic house reef where you are welcome to snorkel at your leisure.

Our second stop will be in Alor, where we’ll be staying with Alami Alor, one of our most popular resorts for running snorkeling safaris. In Alor, you will no doubt be blown away by the sheer beauty and density of the marine life and reefscapes just beneath the surface. There is also the possibility of coming across a couple of the ocean’s most iconic inhabitants, like pods of dolphins and melon head whales, giant ocean sunfish, and even blue whales as we move from site to site. We charter the entire resort just for us so we will be the only guests and will have exclusive access to their house reefs and embark on snorkeling excursions multiple times a day.

17th May 2025 - Arrive into Bali

Upon arrival into Bali International Airport (DPS), you check into the Novotel Airport Hotel and relax and recover from the long journey. There will be a group dinner in the hotel’s restaurant where you’ll have the opportunity to meet the tour leader and the other members of your snorkel group.

18th May 2025 - Transfer to Kalimaya Resort

Meet the group and your tour leader for a buffet breakfast, check out, and go to the departures hall and check in for your flight to Bima, one hour and twenty minutes away.

Upon landing there, you will be met by a member of the Kalimaya team and transferred by car, for about two hours, to their stunning resort in eastern Sumbawa Island. Here you will be shown to your comfortable beachfront bungalows, before an orientation and lunch. If there’s enough time in the day we can organize a snorkel on the house reef.

19th to 23rd May 2025 - Snorkeling from Kalimaya Resort

Days here will look something like this:

Wake up to a delicious a’la carte breakfast with all the trimmings.

Then make your way to their large boat for the morning snorkel session. Each in-water snorkeling session will be around 60-90 minutes and will be guided by local snorkel guides and Snorkel Venture tour leaders who will point out interesting things while in the water. You will have a site briefing before each session.

Depending on the sites we aim to explore that day, we will return to the resort for a two-course lunch served family-style in the open-air restaurant. You will then have the opportunity to jump back on the boat for the afternoon snorkleing session. Or, if you prefer to take it easy, you can just lounge at the resort, enjoy the paddleboards, or explore the fantastic house reef which is accessible by the resort’s pier and beach, depending on the tide.

There may be a couple of days when we enjoy our lunch either on the boats or on a deserted beach where we’ll have a grand picnic as we explore sites further away, and then return to the resort after our final snorkel of the day in the afternoon.

One morning, after breakfast you will travel by boat to the island of Komodo. This island is one of the few that still has a population of wild Komodo dragons. Once you arrive, you get off the boat and take a short walk to the ranger station to meet your guide for the morning. Here one usually sees quite a number of dragons lazing in the sun. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the dragons in their true natural habitat away from typical areas frequented by tourists.

Upon return to the boat, you can change into your snorkel wear, as the group will have the opportunity to snorkel on the way back to the resort.

Dinners are a three-course affair which, like lunch, is served family style. Sumbawa is a very remote island and resources can be quite scarce, particularly when it comes to special diets. That being said, with proper notice they can accommodate most dietary requirements. Please let us know if you have any special dietary needs and we will make sure that information is passed on to Kalimaya.

Tide and weather-dependent, you may have the option of an evening/night snorkel on the house reef, which is a lovely treat as the reef completely transforms after dusk. All the nocturnal creatures come out to feed, crabs, eels, rays, cuttlefish, squid, octopus etc

24th May 2025 - Transfer to Kupang

After breakfast, you check out and transfer back to the Bima Airport where we’ll fly to Bali. We will then catch a flight to Kupang where we’ll be escorted to the Aston Hotel. We will check in and relax before a group dinner that night.

25th May 2025 - Fly to Alor

The following morning we will catch our very short flight to Alor. We’ll be met by the Alami team and transferred via private cars to the resort, about an hour away. Once at the resort, you will be shown to your room and given an orientation and safety briefing, along with lunch.

Alami Alor Resort
Time and interest-dependent, you will have an opportunity to have a guided snorkel on the resort’s house reef. The house reef is accessed via Alami’s own private pier which has an easy to climb ladder for comfortable entry or exit.  The house reef is pretty spectacular and usually ends up being one of the highlights of the trip as the reef just in front of the resort is home to juvenile blacktip reef sharks, a school of jacks and spadefish, a colony of mandarine fish, and loads of cool critters. The beauty of the house reef is that it can snorkel at your leisure, any time you want.

26th to 31st May 2025 - Snorkeling from Alami

The days at the resort will start with breakfast, made to order, served with fresh coffee, coconut water, and hibiscus iced tea. Thereafter the first boat snorkel session of the day, with local guides who will point out and identify interesting marine creatures. The morning snorkeling session will typically last 70-90 minutes.  The resort has two fiberglass speedboats, and the group will be split so that there are 6 people per boat. Sites are within 10 – 30 minutes from the resort. It’s not uncommon to come across the residential pod of dolphins and melon head whales, and if you are lucky the ocean sunfish, or blue whales on the way to and from the snorkeling sites.

Pristine coral reef in Alor

After the morning snorkel session we will return to the resort for lunch, followed by another afternoon boat snorkel session which typically lasts anywhere from 60-90 minutes, after which you will return to the resort. At this point, you may wish to jump in on the house reef as it’s an amazing place to snorkel right around the time the sun goes down. At this time of day, the fish behaviors change and some new reef creatures start to emerge. Night snorkeling will also be available on selected evenings. We highly recommend that you give this a try since the reef transforms into an entirely different place in the dark, and all the nocturnal hunters like octopus, cuttlefish, crabs, shrimps, and squids come out to feed. The house reef also has a resident population of Mandarin fish in the shallows, which are only really active at dusk and definitely worth a look.

All meals are served “family style” at a long table from which each person dishes their own portion. The food is all prepared by excellent chefs with locally sourced ingredients where you will have the opportunity to experience some of Indonesia’s finest dishes.
Fresh bread, cookies, and an assortment of desserts dessert are baked daily. There is also a tea and coffee-making station with fruits and snacks available throughout the day too.
A selection of soft drinks, wine, beer, and cocktails are available every evening and are charged to your account.

1st June 2025 - Departure day

After breakfast, you will be driven to the airport for your flight back to Kupang and then to Bali where the tour ends. Onward extensions can be arranged with our travel team or international departure. Please check with our travel team before booking any international flights for this tour.
