Join us on board the Atlantis Azores Liveaboard as we cruise between islands exploring a diverse collection of reefs in the heart of the coral triangle. We'll be snorkeling the Visayas Islands in the central region of the country, an area which boasts clear waters, vibrant marine life and healthy coral reefs.
Aside from days spent snorkeling the reef there is an optional land tour on Bohol Island to see the Chocolate Hills and other topside highlights. For those that want to maximise their snorkel time but would like to see the country topside there will also be beach time and trips to the islands between snorkel sessions.
This snorkeling safari features 6 nights on the Atlantis Azores Liveaboard with a final night at the Atlantis Dumaguete Resort. On the liveaboard we'll travel between islands, usually basing ourselves in a location for 1 or 2 days before moving on in search of beautiful snorkeling sites and abundant marine life - all while being back dropped by the stunning landscape of the Philippine islands.
The safari features 4 main locations in the Visayas Island group - Moalboal, Bohol, Pamilacan Island & Apo Island. Each region offers a variety of topographical underwater landscapes from plunging walls to shallow coral gardens, pinnacles and sea mounts.
Much of the snorkeling will be enjoyed over shallow fringing reefs - expect healthy hard and soft coral gardens with plenty of turtles, potential for rays and sharks and a high diversity of fish life. Conditions in the water should make for easy snorkeling with protection from neighbouring islands and calm surface conditions - these locations are not prone to strong currents. A more detailed schedule can be found in the Itinerary Section.
This group tour is exclusively for snorkelers and offers six days of snorkeling from the liveaboard. The tour begins and ends in Dumaguete, a short internal flight from Manila International Airport.
All trips are accompanied by local guides, well versed in the marine life on the reefs, as well as a member of the Snorkel Venture team. Staff are available to help with water entry and exits, and all snorkel sessions have boat surface support to ensure our safety.
Day 1 - Moalboal and Pescador - Meet staff and transfer to the Atlantis Azores Liveaboard boat. Set sail to Moalboal. Our first snorkeling sessions will be here, among schooling fish like trevally and snapper, clown fish and turtles are commonly seen. At Pescador Island, a well known sea mount plunging in to the ocean depths with coral covered walls - we may see reef sharks alongside a diverse abundance of tropical fish. At Panagsama Reef there is a resident shoal of thousands of sardines. Watching these fish, moving in unison in huge shiny groups as the hunting trevally chase them is truly a spectacular sight.
Day 2 & 3 - Panglao/Bohol/Alona beach (world famous)/Balicasag- The reefs surrounding these islands are beautiful with huge old coral formations, a variety of colorful soft corals, a multitude of tropical reef fish species, turtles, frog fishes and more. The waters in this area are home to pods of dolphins and we have a good chance to spot some while in this archipelago. While in the area we will make a stop at Virgin Island - a nearby sand bar and picturesque islet.
Day 4 - Pamilacan Island - This tiny island lies about 12KM off the Bohol coast, and is home to only 200 families who together live a subsistence fishing lifestyle and prioritize the health of the waters that support their lifestyle. Surrounded by healthy reef, we can expect to see schools of jacks and sardines, turtles, angel fish, various anemone fish, butterfly fish, nudibranchs and more. Here we will spend some time on the white powder beaches and we will take a short tour around the island led by members of the community.
Day 5 - Sumilon - Sumilon Island was the first marine protected area in the Philippines and was created as a marine sanctuary in 1974. The years of protection have paid off, and the it boasts stunning reefs with an abundance of schooling of fish. Here we will spend some time enjoying the pristine beaches, and also enjoy a beach BBQ for dinner.
Day 6 Apo Island - Apo Island is a small volcanic island lying 30Km's off Negros Oriental. The marine protected area was established some 35 years ago, and is a strictly policed "no take zone". As a result some of the most colorful and healthy reefs in the country are found here. We can expect to see schooling jacks, trevally and barracuda, green-sea and hawksbill turtles, and a huge variety of nudibranchs, crabs and other critters in this area.
Optional Land Tour - Day 3
Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Sanctuary, Butterfly Farm and Hinagdanan Cave
Take in some of the best sites of Bohol.
The Chocolate Hills are probably Bohol’s most famous tourist attraction ‐ they look like giant mole hills; covered
with grass, which, at the end of the dry season, turns chocolate brown.
Visit the Tarsiers ‐ the world’s smallest primate and stop at a unique Butterfly Farm.
You will end the day at Hinagdanan Cave, a naturally lighted cavern with a deep lagoon and many large
stalactites and stalagmites. You will also have the opportunity to swim in the cave.
This trip usually leaves right after an early lunch on board and does involve some lengthy, but scenic drives.
Approximately 5 hours.
