Join us on a unique snorkeling expedition to Mexico’s Baja California Sur, a magical place where the ocean is still wild and full of life. This expedition has been created to take us further offshore for the chance of encountering some of the ocean’s most spectacular creatures.

We will be based in La Ventana, a small town on the Gulf of California, facing the majestic Isla Cerralvo. We will be focusing on searching for the epic Mobula Munkiana aggregations as these amazing animals come together for mating and feeding before migrating into the Pacific Ocean. As we search for the mobula rays, there are also chances to come across other marine megafauna, like orca whales, dolphins, turtles, oceanic mantas, sea lions, and several species of whale! We will often travel up to 40 miles offshore or up and down the coast to hopefully encounter incredible animals.
Is this trip right for me?
This is a very unique type of trip in that a good portion of our time (up to 8 hours a day) is spent in the open ocean looking for the mobulas and the other marine megafauna that roam these waters. Whales, sea lions, sharks, turtles, and dolphins are also frequently spotted in the area. If we come across them, we could very well have the opportunity to get in the water with them.

Even though the team we’ll be working with has incredible knowledge of the marine life here, there can be times when we won’t see anything for anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours, as these pelagic species can be hard to find at times.
We also need to say that, as these pelagic species can move relatively quickly, there may be a lot of getting into and out of the boat via the ladder as we reposition the boat to get back in the water. This safari is one of our more physically demanding tours, and a reasonable level of physical strength is required for this particular tour.
Also, please note that there are no toilets on the boats. For more information about what you can expect from this tour, please get in touch with us.
Melissa. March 2023
‘I had a terrific time on the Mexico Pelagic Safari snorkel trip led by Marcus in March 2023. It was truly a unique experience, despite not being able to see whale sharks due to government regulation. For example, being nearby as a mother humpback taught her baby how to breach, watching curious gray whales spyhop and then swim directly under our boat, being in the water near a Mako shark, and snorkeling amongst cavorting sea lions’

Day 1 - Arrive in San Jose del Cabo
Day 2 - Transfer to La Ventana

Day 2 - 6 Mobula & Marine Megafauna Expedition
Breakfast will be served before our morning boat departure (departure time may vary, usually around 7am). The boat will pick us up on the beach, which is just a short walk from where we’re staying.

The boats we use are panga-style with plenty of shade and a sturdy ladder. On the boat, we will have a cooler with water and drinks, snacks, fruit, and burritos for lunch.
During our trips, we sometimes go up to 40 miles offshore; it’s important to be comfortable with long days on the boat. At the end of the day, we will go back to our little villa compound to relax before our drinks and dinner, which will be prepared for us in the communal lounge and dining room by our private cooks.

Apart from encountering giant schools of Mobula Munkiana, we have the chance to see superpods of dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, pods of pilot whales, whale sharks, oceanic mantas, and a few other whale species, including orcas.
This is a trip for a true adventurer, come for the uniqe wilderness of the ocean and try your luck at encountering some of the ocean’s most incredible animals.

Please note there is no guarantee we will find orcas on our trips. While we do hope we do, these animals are highly intelligent and unpredictable. If you are joining only in the hopes of swimming with orcas, we’re sorry, this trip is not for you. We cannot guarentee what marine megafauna we will see.
Day 7 - Transfer to San Jose del Cabo
After a typical Mexican breakfast, we will head back to San Jose del Cabo to drop off guests at their hotel or airport.
If you are planning on flying home on this date, please book your flight for after 12 pm to allow for any delays on the highway.
Camp Latitude
We will be staying in the small town of La Ventana, where we’ll be staying in a little villa complex just up from the beach we like to call Camp Latitude. A few years ago, La Ventana was a pretty unknown spot where kite surfers used to come during the windy months to take advantage of the excellent kite surfing conditions, but now it’s becoming a very well-known area for its biodiverse waters and predictable encounters with larger marine life.

Camp Latitude is a little villa compound that we will take over completely. There are a few different accommodation styles, all of which have comfortable furnishings with AC, hot water, kitchenette, lounge areas, and outdoor porches. There is a large communal area with sofas and large dining room tables, an espresso machine, bar, fridges, and a full kitchen. This is where we’ll recieve our briefings, lounge, and take all of our meals. It’s fantastic place to start and finish our day together.
2 Bedroom Villa

There are a couple of two-bedroom options with a living room and kitchen. The living room is air-conditioned, but the bedrooms are not, so it’s best to sleep with the bedroom doors open to allow the AC into the room. The bedrooms do have a ceiling fan above the bed. As such, we are selling the two-bed villas for use by one couple.
One Bedroom Villas

There are also several one-bedroom options with a kitchenette, a work desk, ensuite bathrooms, hot water showers, AC, ceiling fan, and water refill jugs.

Snorkel Boats
We will be using panga-style boats (we will split the group between the two boats). The boats have sun canopies, padded seats, as well as a comfortable ladder for exiting the water.
