If you’re looking for pristine reefs devoid of tourist boats and other people in the water with great chances of manta ray encounters and beautiful scenery above and below the surface then look no further than our Komodo & Sumbawa Snorkel Week. We’ll be located in our own little oasis in eastern Sumbawa where we’ll have exclusive access to four different regions for some truly amazing and unique snorkeling. Whilst based at the stunning Kalimaya Dive Resort, our days will be spent exploring the range of reefs and marine environments in West Komodo, Sangeang Volcano, Gila Banta, and Eastern Sumbawa.
One of the best things about this tour is that Kalimaya is the only resort in the area, and only one or two liveaboards ever make it over to this fantastic region, so you can pretty much guarantee we’ll be the only people in the water wherever we are. Much of our time will be spent exploring the shallow fringe reefs that surround the various islands. As this area is seldom visited by people, you can expect pristine hard and soft corals in abundance here as well as busy fish life and the chance of turtles, larger rays, and reef sharks cruising around. Around Sangeang Volcano, which is still semi-active, you’ll have the opportunity to swim over its bubbling black sands and hyper-rich reefs which are unlike any of the other reefs in the region as a result of its nutrient-dense volcanic substrate. Sangeang is also a fantastic place to hunt for those strange critters like frogfish, leaf scorpion fish, and of course nudibranchs!
Kalimaya also has its own fantastic house reef, and, like many of the resorts we use that have house reefs, it’s not uncommon for snorkelers to spend several hours cruising in the shallows here – there is a tremendous amount here of life and it’s great for photography.
Our resort location is simply breathtaking, with amazing island views from your veranda and a beach bar for ‘Apres snorkel’, it’s a great place to return to and watch the sunset after an amazing day of snorkeling.

Day 1 - Arrive into Bali
Upon arrival into Bali International Airport (DPS), you check into the Novotel Airport Hotel and relax and recover from the long journey.
Day 2 - Transfer to Kalimaya Resort
Meet the group and your tour leader for a buffet breakfast, check out, and go to the departures hall and check in for your flight to Bima, one hour and twenty minutes away.
Upon landing there, you will be met by a member of the Kalimaya team and transferred by car, for about two hours, to their stunning resort in eastern Sumbawa Island. Here you will be shown to your comfortable beachfront bungalows, before an orientation and lunch.
Day 3 - 8 - Snorkeling from Kalimaya Resort
Days here will look something like this:
Wake up to a delicious a’la carte breakfast with all the trimmings.
Then make your way to their large boat for the morning snorkel session. Each in-water snorkeling session will be around 60-90 minutes and will be guided by local snorkel guides and Snorkel Venture tour leaders who will point out interesting things while in the water. You will have a site briefing before each session.
Depending on the sites we aim to explore each day, we will return to the resort for a two-course lunch served family-style in the open-air restaurant. You will then have the opportunity to jump back on the boat for the afternoon snorkleing session. Or, if you prefer to take it easy, you can just lounge at the resort, enjoy the paddleboards, or explore the fantastic house reef which is accessible by the resort’s pier and beach, depending on the tide.
There may be a couple of days when we enjoy our lunch either on the boats or on a deserted beach where we’ll have a grand picnic as we explore sites further away, and then return to the resort after our final snorkel of the day in the afternoon.
One morning, after breakfast you will travel by boat to the island of Komodo. This island is one of the few that still has a population of wild Komodo dragons. Once you arrive, you get off the boat and take a short walk to the ranger station to meet your guide for the morning. Here one usually sees quite a number of dragons lazing in the sun. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the dragons in their true natural habitat away from typical areas frequented by tourists.
Upon return to the boat, you can change into your snorkel wear, as the group will have the opportunity to snorkel on the way back to the resort.
Dinners are a three-course affair which, like lunch, is served family style. Sumbawa is a very remote island and resources can be quite scarce, particularly when it comes to special diets. That being said, with proper notice they are able to accommodate most dietary requirements. Please let us know if you have any special dietary needs and we will make sure that information is passed on to Kalimaya.
Tide and weather dependent, you may have the option of an evening/night snorkel on the house reef, which is a lovely treat as the reef completely transforms after dusk. All the nocturnal creatures come out to feed, crabs, eels, rays, cuttlefish, squid, octopus etc
Day 9 - Return to Bali, Tour Ends
After breakfast, you check out and transfer back to Labuan Bajo, to the airport for your group flight to Bali. Here you bid farewell to your new friends and the tour ends.
There are 10 rooms at Kalimaya Resort – all with en suite bathrooms with hot water and Air Conditioning.
In the rooms, there is a mini bar with cold drinks, a coffee station, a desk, closet space, and lounge chairs on the private verandas that face the sea.
The restaurant serves up a variety of Indonesian and international meals throughout the day whilst the bar at the front of the beach is a great place to get together at the end of the day for sun downers. There is also an onsite spa to relaxing massages and treatments.
The resort’s beachfront pool is a fantastic place to cool off or lounge around on one of their comfortable sun-loungers.
