We think we’ve come up with the ultimate snorkeling adventure with our Alor & Komodo Family Snorkeling Safari. This tour combines amazing reefs full of colorful marine life big and small with fantastic boutique resorts, each with its own amazing house reef! Alor and Komodo are arguably two of Indonesia’s premier snorkeling locations, and are exceptional places to places to visit with the whole family.

At our first stop in Alor you will be blown away by the sheer beauty of the marine life and reefscapes just beneath the surface. There is also the possibility of coming across a couple of the ocean’s most iconic inhabitants, like a superpod of dolphins and melon head whales, giant ocean sunfish, and even blue whales as we move from site to site. Here in Alor, we base ourselves in the secluded resort called Alami Alor, where we will be the only guests and will have exclusive access to their house reefs and embark on snorkeling excursions multiple times a day.

For the second leg of the trip, we move over to Komodo National Park where we will stay with Komodo Resort. This resort is situated on its own private island complete with hiking trails, a spa, gym, beach, decadent meals, and an outstanding house reef. Better yet, the resort is on the doorstep to the national park boundary where we will encounter turtles, reef sharks, cephalopods, and almost certainly giant manta rays! Oh yes of course encounters with the famous Komodo Dragons!

What’s a Family Safari Like?

Like all of our snorkleing safaris, from start to finish, it will be led by one of our snorkleing guides who will be with you at the airport in Jakarta where we meet in the beginning and escort you and your loved ones for the duration of the trip, in and out of the water, until we part ways back at the airport. The only difference with this trip is that it’s aimed at bringing families together for this amazing experience, instead of solo adult travelers or couples like our other tours. On these family safaris, we welcome children ages 5-18 onboard! With the house reef right at the doorsteps to both resorts, daily excursions to world-class snorkeling sites, opportunities to visit traditional villages and of course the famous Komodo dragons, we feel like this is the ultimate family adventure.

This tour is partnered with the Manta Trust. Find out how we support the Manta Trust via this tour here.

Day 1 - Arrive Jakarta

Arrive into Jakarta and meet your tour leader. Rest and relax. We’ll have a group dinner where you can meet everyone, and then we’ll check out around 11:30pm for our very 2am flight to Kupang and then Alor where we’ll be met by the resort staff who will drive in private cars to the resort, forty-five minutes away.

Day 2 - Day 8 - Alami Alor Resort

You’ll spend 7 nights at the beautiful Alami Alor Resort.

Alami Alor Resort

Our mornings at Alami Alor start with Western and Indonesia style breakfasts. Fresh Indonesian coffee, fruit juice, or coconut milk.

We’ll then head to the boats which are parked at the end of the resort’s private pier. Groups are split into 6 per boat with at least one guide per group, often 2. We start with easy sites – as little current as possible to allow for a gentle introduction. The time to reach the sites ranges from 10 – 30 minutes.

Each snorkel session will last between 60 and 90 minutes in the water with boat support if you prefer a shorter session. We will always head back to the resort for lunch with most guests taking a quick siesta following the delicious meal. For those that want to absorb every single moment of this amazing resort, you can relax on the verandah and watch the villagers pass by on their hand-dug canoes. In the afternoon we will head to another site for another incredible snorkeling session.

There’s the flexibility to snorkel the house reef at your leisure with a local crew on hand as a lookout. Likewise, we often do a sunset snorkel or night snorkel on the house reef as it’s an excellent spot for critters like nudibranchs and various crustaceans who come out in the evenings. Mandarin fish can also be seen mating in the shallows as the sunsets.

We will also have the opportunity to visit a traditional village where you can watch the village perform a unique song and dance, after which you can tour of their village and even purchase some of their handmade crafts.

Day 9 - Travel to Komodo

Travel to Komodo, we expect to arrive at the resort for sunset. After our resort and safety orientation, it’s time to relax.  Komodo is excellent for star gazing, and with the resort’s bar strategically located on the beach it makes the perfect place to watch the stars with a delicious beverage in hand.

Day 9 - Day 14 - Komodo Resort

You’ll spend 6 nights at Komodo Resort. A full breakfast buffet spread is the order of the day. At around 9.30 we prepare for a day on the boat in the national park. Komodo Resort’s boats are spacious with bean bags on the upper deck which are great for seeing the passing islands and wildlife. It takes around 1hr to reach most sites. Snorkel sessions last between 60 and 90 minutes with boat support if you prefer a shorter session. The days vary a bit depending on the sites we are planning to visit. On some days we will go out for two snorkeling sessions at different sites and return for lunch at the resort. On other days we stay in the park for the day, taking lunch on the boat and with time to relax in the beanbags on the upper deck as we pass between sites. Returning around 4 pm there’s a chance to explore the impressive house reef. We’ll also include a tour to see the famous Komodo dragons and explore some fantastic trails around the island.
