Wakatobi National Park, a UNESCO Marine Biosphere Reserve, was named by combining the first letters of the names of the four main islands in the chain, Wangi-wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Bionko.
The reserve is situated at the geographical center of the Coral Triangle, the most marine bio-diverse environment in the world. in fact, Wakatobi, in particular, is recognized as having the highest number of coral and fish species found anywhere on the planet.
As we snorkel Wakatobi, we can expect to find everything from cuttlefish and turtles to nudibranchs and octopus. The sloping reefs start in the very shallow water and drop off below us. Consequently, we can spot critters close up, enjoy the juvenile fish that dwell in the shallows and watch the schools of fish next to the drop off.
Additionally, the resort has a truly amazing house reef easily accessed from the resort’s pier. Fortunately, we can snorkel the house reef at our leisure and enjoy the combination of sea grass, sandy bottom and healthy reef on our doorstep. The combination of substrate attracts all sorts of marine life. Swimming eels and rays are often spotted while enjoying sundowners at the jetty bar.
This snorkel safari is based at Wakatobi Resort- with its luxurious bungalows set on the beachfront. We will snorkel Wakatobi from large wooden boats, with local guides pointing out interesting marine creatures. The resort is accessed by charter flights from Bali so we expect to see very few other people in the water as we snorkel Wakatobi.

Day 1 - Arrive in Bali
The tour meets in Bali. Upon arrival you can go and check in to our Bali hotel for the night, relax, and recover from the long journey. That evening there will be a group dinner in the hotel’s restaurant. This is a great time to meet your Snorkel Venture Tour Leader along with the other snorkeling guests.
Day 2 - Bali - Wakatobi Resort
The group meets in the lobby and makes its way to the domestic departures hall to check-in for the charter flight to Wakatobi, followed by a nice breakfast in the restaurant in the terminal upstairs.
Upon arrival at Wakatobi private airstrip, we are transferred to the resort to check in via a short car ride to the port followed by a 30-minute boat ride to the resort. We’ll have lunch and an orientation and safety briefing, followed by an optional afternoon snorkeling session, time permitting.
Day 3 -12 - Snorkeling from Wakatobi Resort
Each day we will wake up to a fabulous breakfast, followed by a site briefing and snorkel session. Each snorkel session will last 60 minutes and have boat surface support, and in-water snorkel guides who will point out interesting creatures and be available to assist with creature ID. We return to the resort for a sumptuous lunch and then head out to another site for an afternoon snorkel session. We can access the extensive, lush house reef at our leisure from the resort’s pier.
There are 3 optional boat snorkels each day, with an optional night snorkel or two during our stay, all of which are facilitated by our own private boats. Towels, snacks, and water are provided on the boats for use after our snorkel sessions.
The snorkeling in Wakatobi is really quite amazing. The reefs are vibrant and expansive, and marine life is in abundance. The reefs are typically characterized by coral plateaus which start right at the shoreline and fan out around the island and gently slope to about fifteen feet before they abruptly drop off into a wall. The area has done well with its conservation measures and pristine reefs and the diverse array of marine life is a testament to their efforts. Some of the highlights from past trips have been dozens of crocodile fish, schools of snappers and fusileers, sea snakes, nudibranchs, Spanish mackerel, and even a blue ring octopus spotted right on the house reef.
Most meals are served buffet style, and include an Asian Fusion cuisine with fresh, chef-prepared options- daily roasts, salads and soups, and a variety of enticing desserts. The resort prides itself in offering a fine dining experience so we can expect delicious food, served in the Beach Restaurant. Evening cocktails can be enjoyed at the Jetty Bar sitting over the water and enjoying the stunning view or night sky.
The resort can cater to most dietary requirements, please let us know if you have any with some notice to ensure they can get the necessary ingredients.
Day 13 - Charter flight to Bali
On the last morning, we check out after breakfast and take a mid-morning flight back to Bali where the tour ends.
Wakatobi Resort is completely secluded, reached by charted flights from Bali which land on a private airstrip followed by a short speed boat ride.
Despite it’s location, the resort has beautiful luxurious accommodations built in tune with the environment using ethically and locally sourced materials and labor. The resort offers other creature comforts like a full-service spa, a jetty cocktail bar with amazing sunset views, a small library an audio-visual room, and souvenir shop.
The food at the resort is refined, and the professional chefs combine fresh ingredients to create a variety of Indonesian, Asian and International dishes. All special dietary requirements will be catered for (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free etc).

Wakatobi Snorkel Boat
Large wooden boats complete with gear up areas and full canopy for sun protection. Marine toilet with shower are on all boats as well as fresh water bins for equipment and cameras. Average travel time from the resort to the sites are fifteen minutes. Exit the water via ladders on the side of the boat.
